Walls

The minister was giving a sermon on Nehemiah and the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem, and how some men began to build around their own places first. As I listened, I began to see how we also build a wall around ourselves when we are damaged. They are invisible walls that we put up to keep others out. This is protection against hurts that have been inflicted upon us by someone either knowingly or unknowingly and have a deep impact on our lives. I can remember a very special friend that I had gone to school with and due to one word that I had said, she was deeply hurt and built a wall to keep me out. I was unaware that I had hurt her, she did not let me know, so for 30 years I wondered what I had done and was hurt due to our loss of friendship. She died 2 years ago of cancer, I was able to get her phone number to place a call and tell her I loved her. We cried together over a mistaken word said, and my heart is now at ease. I too have put up walls due to things done, but in the future I will apologize if I feel that I may have hurt someone, and will also let another know if they have hurt me.
